Fortune

Born pretty in Cambodia, she suffers
Her father and older brothers
As they drug then carry her
Often without underwear
To the roadside in late afternoon.

She is the virgin living the legend
As the cure for AIDS and hunger.

For one week I see her
Young hands reach for the Khmer
Who leaves her to be paid for
By foreign men.

Two years later, I think of her,
hand-held mirror,
its crack of recognition
between our cultures. Pretty.

Inside Cambodia

The holy and the old
Women chew betel nut
And weave cloth on looms
in the mid-morning
while the monks gather
alms through their black-
and-blue blessings.

Tuol Sleng Prison1

Please say each skull has a voice
and an appetite. When I press
my ear to their jaws, crab

shells and dried rice drop out.
Then their smells rise to me:
lemongrass, coriander,

mint leaves. Now empty
their sustenance. Disquieted
their once envied salts

and palm sugar. Please say
each skull has a voice. What can I do
with you, my sound, their tongues undressing .
