Η Graham είναι συγγραφέας πολυάριθμων συλλογών ποίησης, με πρόσφατες την Sea Change (Ecco, 2008), Never (2002), Swarm (2000), και The Dream of the Unified Field: Selected Poems 1974-1994, η οποία κέρδισε το Βραβείο Πούλιτζερ Ποίησης το 1996.

Η Graham έχει επίσης επιμεληθεί δύο ανθολογιών, του Earth Took of Earth: 100 Great Poems of the English Language (1996) και του The best American Poetry (1990).

ACT III, SC. 2

Look she said this is not the distance
we wanted to stay at—We wanted to get
close, very close. But what
is the way in again? And is it

too late? She could hear the actions
rushing past—but they are on
another track. And in the silence,
or whatever it is that follows,

there was still the buzzing: motes, spores,
aftereffects and whatnot recalled the morning after.
Then the thickness you can’t get past called waiting.

Then the you, whoever you are, peering down to see if it’s
                                                                      done yet.
Then just the look on things being looked-at.
Then just the look of things being seen.

The Dream of the Unified Field:Selected Poems 1974-1994.

MIRROR PRAYER
                                                         For Emily

Here’s where I lower you
into the drizzle
of the visible
my eager one,
where I hold you out like a gift
to this water, out at the end of my hand, to steady you,

in payment, a small sweetness I feed
into the eye…
Lacan tells me
you have believed till now
in your tapering, your
harrowing,

that you are nothing
but parts,
a harried, frenzied, limb from limb
discretion,
and that as I draw
you out, my flailing, drifting

one, peninsula, you will cohere
before your eyes
and see yourself
for the first time
whole. He tells me the frantic
ecstatic tremor

that will possess you, the terrifying
joy. Laughing

OVER AND OVER STITCH

Late in the season the world digs in, the fat blossoms
hold still for just a moment longer.
Nothing looks satisfied,
but there is no real reason to move on much further:
this isn’t a bad place;
why not pretend

we wished for it?
The bushes have learned to live with their haunches.
The hydrangea is resigned
to its pale and inconclusive utterances.
Towards the end of the season
it is not bad

to have the body. To have experienced joy
as the mere lifting of hunger
is not to have known it
less. The tobacco leaves
don’t mind being removed
to the long racks—all uses are astounding

to the used.
There are moments in our lives which, threaded, give us heaven—
noon, for instance, or all the single victories
of gravity, or the kudzu vine,
most delicate of manias,
which has pressed its luck

this far this season.
It shines a gloating green.
Its edges darken with impatience, a kind of wind.
Nothing again will ever be this easy, lives
being snatched up like dropped stitches, the dry stalks of daylilies
marking a stillness we can’t keep.

The Dream of the Unified Field: Selected Poems 1974-1994.

ότι ευχηθήκαμε για αυτό;
